PhD student (f/m/d) for the Department of Tumor Biology

PhD student (f/m/d) for the Department of Tumor Biology

Part-time | Location: Hamburg-Eppendorf | Center for Experimental Medicine – Department of Tumor Biology – University Medical Center Hamburg-Eppendorf

At the UKE, we are convinced that successful and fulfilling work should be harmonised with the personal needs and individual life plans of all employees. Together we can make this possible.

Every day a little more. Every day a little better.

What to expect

We are the UKE – the University Medical Centre Hamburg-Eppendorf [Universitätsklinikum Hamburg-Eppendorf]. A pulsating centre of health in the heart of Hamburg. When you are surrounded by that much energy and when progress sets the pace, no two days are the same. More than 14,400 employees with very different responsibilities are united by the same goal: ensuring health and well-being.

The Department of Tumor Biology works at better understanding the molecular mechanisms underlying cancer development and progression, as well as improving cancer diagnostics and treatment of cancer patients. The translational research at our department has already contributed significantly to an improvement of cancer diagnostics of a variety of cancers by the development of blood-based diagnostic tests, called ‘liquid biopsy’. With our newly EU funded project with a total of 18 institutions from 8 EU countries, we will jointly promote the application of liquid biopsy towards early detection of cancer. The overarching goal of the project is to establish a blood test for early detection of pancreatic cancer as one of the deadliest diseases in Europe.

Liquid biopsy has been highlighted as milestone in cancer research by the journal NATURE. Our project part will specifically involve the establishment and validation of ultra-sensitive blood tests using a comprehensive panel of sensitive liquid biopsy markers including circulating cells, cell-free DNA, proteins and metabolites.

This position is to be filled with 65 percent of the regular weekly working time within the framework of a third-party funded project for a limited period until the end of January 2027.
