Integrative Advanced Clinician Scientists Targeting Inflammatory and Infectious Diseases

The newly BMBF-founded programme ‘iSTAR – integrative Advanced Clinician Scientists Targeting Inflammatory and Infectious Disease’ at the University Medical Centre Hamburg-Eppendorf (UKE) supports excellent clinician scientists to develop independence and leadership in the field of immune-mediated inflammatory diseases.
The benefits for the members of the iSTAR programme are:
- A competitive starting package and continued funding for up to 6 years
- At least 50% protected time for research
- Participation in the structured and individualized iSTAR-Curriculum including: - Leadership Training: Courses and lectures appropriate to the career stage, primarily focusing on research-oriented leadership skills and teaching - High-profile Mentoring: Support in strategic career planning as well as possibilities for interdisciplinary networking, ex-change and cooperation with peers and renowned scientific experts - Advanced medical training: Treatment of patients with autoimmune and chronic inflammatory diseases as well as infections in clinical teams; access to patient cohorts
- Integration into the Hamburg Center for Translational Immunology (HCTI), which offers unique research networks, shared databases and biobanks, as well as disease modeling and translational platforms
The call is open to scientifically and clinically highly-qualified clinicians,
- who have already or will shortly receive their certification as medical specialist (Facharzt/-ärztin),
- who have a proven and outstanding research profile with a focus on inflammatory or infectious diseases,
- who have already successfully secured third-party funding.

- a motivational letter, including (i) how the planned project would contribute to the achievement of iSTAR’s long-term goal to close the lag between basic research and clinical applications in the field of inflammatory and infectious diseases, and (ii) which team-oriented processes the applicant would like to implement to build and advance her/his group.
- a research proposal with time and budget plan for a funding period of 6 years (max. 5 pages);
- a letter of support by the current and if applicable former clinical mentor confirming the clinical qualification;
- two additional reference letters from clinical and scientific mentors.
